The Shanti Farm in Northern Israel is a non-profit center for the rescue and rehabilitation of a wide range of animals. From cows, pigs, chickens and goats to cats and dogs, we work to create a loving environment for animals of all kinds. The Shanti Farm was established in 2019 by animal activist and advocate Inbal Kessem, who believes in protecting those who don't have a voice in society, and are often neglected, abandoned and invisible and are in need of our care and compassion. We specialize in the hardest cases, animals who are wounded or disabled, the ones others have given up on. We take them all in with a commitment to rehabilitate and care for them, which includes thousands of dollars a month in veterinary costs. We have found loving homes for over 1,000 animals since we began. We work with dozens of dedicated volunteers each week and create connections and healing between people and our animal friends.
Since the war began in October 2023, we have taken in more than 200 traumatized and often wounded dogs and cats from southern Israel and Gaza, and the numbers of abandoned animals have increased significantly over the past year nationwide – them being the silent victims of the war.
A few days after the attack on Israel began, three brothers from Shuva and Netivot, Dror, Eliran, and Kobi recognized the soldiers' need for food, medicine, etc. and they established a rest station for the fighting forces. Ever since, they have provided free drinks, food, laundry services, coffee, clothing, and every basic need.
Today Shuva intersection has become a place of pilgrimage, not only for the IDF forces who come daily to refresh and eat, but also for citizens and tourists who come to meet the soldiers, cook, volunteer, and donate money to continue operating the place!
It is important to mention that the financing of Shuva Ahim is private, the Trabelsi brothers are the main financiers of the place, as well as many tourists and Israelis who contribute financially daily.
Since the 7th of October 2023, the Trabelsi brothers simply stopped their businesses, returned from abroad, and have been engaged in non-stop sacred work for the security forces.
During these difficult times, Israeli farmers need our help more than ever. Without workers, they are not able to harvest their crops.
Leket Israel has been sending thousands of volunteers to the farms to assist them with their harvest during this time of crisis.
The protracted war has severely damaged the agricultural sector in Israel. In addition to the damage to agricultural land, equipment, and machinery, the main concern of farmers continues to be the shortage of labor, which began with the departure of foreign workers, and affects both the cultivation of crops and the harvest of crops.
Since the outbreak of the war, more than 70,000 people have enlisted and assisted farmers throughout the country through Leket Israel, in order to ensure the continuation of agricultural activity, which is important for the food security of the country's residents. We are proud to serve as a roof over our heads for all the volunteers and enable them to be a significant support for the rehabilitation of the agricultural sector in Israel.
The vital need for volunteers for farmers was not widely publicized around the world, Lewis shared. "It was only when I arrived in Israel that I realized how difficult the farmers' plight is, and how critical their support is, "The farmers need our help now, it cannot be delayed, they feel how much they appreciate our support and are grateful, people don't understand that local agriculture is essential to the continued existence of the State of Israel"
Since January of this year, Lewis has come to Israel several times, especially to volunteer with Leket Israel. The uncompromising commitment and dedication of Lewis and many volunteers like him who come from around the world to give of themselves and help in any way possible, is what strengthens us as a people, and us as an aid organization, and reminds us every day of the importance of our work. "I feel that I have meaning, that I am doing good, and that I have made new friends for life, we have created a community for ourselves and it is simply amazing."
The situation of farmers and the agriculture industry continues to be difficult. The work of volunteers is essential not only for the farmers, but so that we can ensure fresh fruits and vegetables for all those who need them.
According to Leket Israel's special report, published in July of this year, it appears that the activities of hundreds of thousands of volunteers helped save more than 35,000 tons of agricultural produce worth about NIS 160 million.

"Just wanted to share an incredible experience Betsy Marco Yarkony and I had volunteering with J17, a vegan organization run by the amazing Assaf Ingber, a man with a truly special soul. Assaf is the epitome of generosity and selflessness, dedicating his life to cooking and serving delicious vegan meals from food trucks—for free—to soldiers, Magen David Adom teams, wounded soldiers in hospitals, and victims of the Nova Festival tragedy.
It was genuinely the most rewarding volunteer experience we’ve ever had. Watching Assaf in action, with his heart wide open and his unwavering commitment to helping others, was beyond inspiring. He is the definition of a true mensch, and the work he’s doing is nothing short of remarkable.
Thank you, Assaf, for showing us the power of kindness and compassion in action. If you ever get a chance to support or volunteer with J17, don’t hesitate—you won’t regret it!"
